Dear Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Camp Family,
I hope this email finds you and yours safe and healthy. It’s with a heavy heart that I share that we at GSHNJ have made the prudent, yet heartbreaking, decision to cancel all overnight and day camps for the summer of 2020 at Camp Hoover, Camp DeWitt, and The OVAL.
I know: this decision is disappointing and upsetting. I’m sure your Girl Scout was looking forward to summertime camp adventures as much as I was; and there’s little that’s more important to a quality Girl Scout Leadership Experience than time in the outdoors. However, our top priority remains the safety and well-being of our camp community — our girls, our staff, and their families: there is simply too much uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 for us to operate a responsible, high quality, in-person camp experience this summer.
This will be tough news to share. We’ve put together a special message from all of our Camp Directors (please watch) along with some tools to help you explain the situation to your Girl Scout, and help her work through her feelings.
We want every girl to have the opportunity to experience outdoor adventure and develop a lifelong appreciation for nature and the world around her, whether that be at summer camp, with her troop, or at home with you. I encourage you to visit Girl Scouts at Home frequently to find programs, activities, training, and helpful resources.
While we may not be able to gather in person this summer, I know how important Camp Hoover is to you, and how important it is to me, so be on the lookout for exciting alternative summer camp programming based on your survey feedback. In the meantime, reference our online FAQs, and reach out if you need to. As I hope you will remember, this is goodnight and not goodbye. We will be back in person again, and it will be better than ever.
With each living glowing ember, there are friendships to remember… until I see you all again.
